One of the obvious detriments of the winter season is the freezing cold weather, but energy costs is usually a secondary concern. During these cold months, most people will be blasting the heat to keep their home comfortable for their family. With these additional energy costs, there are some adjustments you may want to make in the process. Here are some great ways to save money:
- Free Heat
The best part about the heat that is emitted from the sun is that it’s free! During these cold months, make sure to keep all your curtains open in your home as soon as the sun is in the sky. You’d be surprised at how much difference the sun makes in keeping your house warm from dawn until dusk.
- Bundle Up
Simply dressing warmer and using extra accessories around the house is the easiest way to reduce your heating costs. Instead of cranking up the heat a couple extra degrees, try putting on a cozy sweater and wool socks when you’re hanging out around the house. Keep blankets nearby if you’re stationary, and add area rugs to insulate your floors if you have hardwood.
- Ceiling Fans
Homes that have better ventilation and airflow can be more energy efficient in the winter months. If you have ceiling fans in your house or apartment, they can be used strategically to achieve better airflow. Switch your fan to a low, clockwise setting in order to trap heat inside and push it back down to keep your rooms warmer during cooler months.
- Nighttime Thermostat
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, you can save about ten percent per year on your heating bills by turning your thermostat down 10 to 15 degrees for eight hours. You’ll be wrapped up in warm, comfy blankets and comforters while you’re sleeping anyway, so there’s no need to keep the heat blasting all night.
- Space Heater
Another great way to cut energy costs is by only heating the rooms that you use throughout the day. One perfect example of this is if you work from home during the day, you would really only need to keep your home office warm. Invest in an energy-efficient space heater for any and all rooms that you need to keep warm during the winter. This will allow you to keep the heat off or very low all winter, and only use electricity for the space heaters.
