CT Energy Rates are Climbing Again

CT Energy Rates are Climbing AgainLike most things in life, energy costs just keep going up!

You probably noticed that as of January 2015, your energy bills increased if you use Connecticut Light & Power or United Illuminating. CL&P customers saw an increase from 9.9990 cents per kilowatt-hour to 12.629 cents per kilowatt-hour (a 26% increase). UI customers went from 8.667 cents to 13.3108 cents (a 53% increase). Both are considered rather steep hikes. This change has affected both homeowners and business owners.

Many homes in Connecticut use about 1200 kilowatt-hours per month, which equates to about an $80 to $120 monthly increase.  This isn’t the first time rates have increased and it certainly won’t be the last. A lot of people are just making ends meet every month, so any increase could be too tough to bare.

Furthermore, the associated fees are climbing as well. Prices of delivery costs, transmission and other fees are also being adjusted.  These fees actually hurt the most because we can’t reduce them by cutting our energy usage.

Even natural gas, which is usually the cheapest energy source besides solar, is becoming more expensive, especially in New England where everything has to be piped in.

What can we do about climbing energy costs?

Get off the grid! Costs are rising because the resources used to make electricity are difficult to obtain and growing scarce. Fortunately, there’s no reason to use them anymore.

Solar panels give you the freedom to no longer rely on your power company. Don’t accept their price increases anymore. In fact, you can actually send money to the power company from your solar panels and collect a check. It all can be installed for a very affordable cost; often with no money down.

If you’re in an area where you can choose between multiple energy providers, you should definitely compare their prices to make sure you’re taking advantage of the best deal. Even if you produce more energy than you need, you still have to technically be connected to the grid. The power companies will “store” your excess energy so you don’t have to install batteries.
